As a buyer for a busy Food Manufacturer, I was horrified to be called one Saturday morning recently by one of our production managers who informed me that he would be running out of Thermal Transfer Ribbons within a few hours. These are vital for our production as they enable us to overprint not only key ‘Best Before’ and ‘Use By’ dates onto our products but also overprint bar-code and box end labels. If we were to run out it would shut down our production lines until we managed to get stock in. It was about 10am on the Saturday morning I tried to contact Datamark UK at their office in Hull but found nobody available at the office, however I managed to find a contact number online for their Sales Manager whom I rang on his mobile and explained our situation. He was very clear and calm and told me not to worry that he would do all he could to ensure our Production Lines were not stopped through lack of the ribbons we required. He advised me that he would make a couple of calls and find out what could be done to get product to us ASAP. Within 20 minutes I was called back by Datamark’s Sales Manager to be told that the ribbons we required would be delivered to our factory within 45 minutes, followed by another call from him 60 minutes later to check we had received the ribbons, which we had done. Rapid Response to Urgent Requirements We first approached Datamark UK when we had an issue with our current supplier who should have supplied us with Plain Labels for labelling our Pallets and after three days beyond the promised delivery date we were still waiting for supply. Without these labels a number of large pallets containing product ready for shipment would not have been able to be dispatched to arrive at our customers on time. We contacted Datamark UK in Hull and were passed on to their Sales Manager, Mark Newton, at 10.30am. He established exactly what we needed, despite not having the exact size we were looking for, he offered us an alternative within a couple of mm’s and we agreed on a price for 10,000 labels. He promised us labels early that afternoon, so we placed our order at 10.50am and at 1.35pm that very afternoon our labels had arrived. Innovative Ideas Helped Us Save Time and Money As part of our process for manufacturing aircraft wings’ we have to precisely mark 75mm intervals on an aluminium part, which can vary in length from 2m to 22m, to prepare it to be shaped accurately. When we started to measure these intervals it was done by hand, which was incredibly time consuming and so we were constantly looking for more efficient alternatives. We did come up with one solution using a printed self-adhesive tape, which didn’t stretch therefore enabled us to accurately mark every 75mm. This however continued to be a time consuming solution and quite expensive. It was during our search for an alternative solution that we met up with Datamark UK who were surprisingly confident that they could provide a solution to this problem. They trialed with us an Ink-Jet Print solution using a specialist ink, which enabled a speedy application, by hand-held printers, clearly marking every 75mm on the aluminium parts. These products however are not developed for printing lengthy items varying from 2 to 22m so Datamark got in touch with the ink-jet printer manufacturers and were able to convince them to adapt their software so as to accommodate printing the required measurements up to lengths of 22m. We were enthused that their solution to a problem we had had for a number of years seemed so simple, but sure enough when the products arrived they worked exactly as we’d requested and we’ve never looked back.
